The Twelve Lagnas

Six Lagnas With a Yogakaraka

Taurus and Libra, Cancer and Leo, and the curious case of Capricorn and Aquarius.

Venus lagnas and the luminary lagnas

How to read these cards

Each lagna card lists every sign-ruling graha, the houses it rules from that lagna, and its class in Raman's table (How to Judge a Horoscope, Vol. I, ch. 2). Every lordship is re-derived from the sign lords you already know.

Don't memorise twelve tables. For each lagna, learn the yogakaraka, the best benefic, and the worst malefic, then notice how the rest follow from the rules in the last two levels.

Taurus lagna

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn | 9th + 10th | Yogakaraka, the best benefic |
| Mercury | 2nd + 5th | Benefic |
| Sun | 4th | Benefic (malefic owning a kendra) |
| Mars | 7th + 12th | Benefic (same reason) |
| Venus | 1st + 6th | Neutral: lagna lordship offsets the 6th |
| Jupiter | 8th + 11th | Malefic |
| Moon | 3rd | Malefic |

Taurus is where the textbook complaint flips hardest: the graha people fear rules the chart's two best houses, and the graha people pray to rules the 8th and 11th.

Libra lagna

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn | 4th + 5th | Yogakaraka, the best benefic |
| Mercury | 9th + 12th | Benefic |
| Venus | 1st + 8th | Benefic: the lagna lord isn't blamed for its 8th |
| Mars | 2nd + 7th | A feeble benefic |
| Sun | 11th | Malefic |
| Jupiter | 3rd + 6th | Malefic |
| Moon | 10th | Malefic (benefic owning a kendra) |

Taurus and Libra share a lagna lord and a yogakaraka, and on both Jupiter and the Moon come out malefic. Where they differ is the Sun: benefic for Taurus (4th lord), malefic for Libra (11th lord).

Cancer lagna

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Mars | 5th + 10th | Yogakaraka, the better benefic |
| Jupiter | 6th + 9th | Benefic: the 9th outweighs the 6th |
| Saturn | 7th + 8th | Neutral |
| Moon | 1st | Neutral: Raman's lagna-lord exception |
| Sun | 2nd | Neutral |
| Venus | 4th + 11th | Malefic |
| Mercury | 3rd + 12th | Malefic |

Cancer is a lagna where Jupiter is a benefic, which is one reason answers to "is Jupiter good for me?" differ so much between people.

Leo lagna

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Mars | 4th + 9th | Yogakaraka, the most auspicious |
| Sun | 1st | Benefic |
| Jupiter | 5th + 8th | Neutral: trine lifts, 8th drags |
| Saturn | 6th + 7th | Neutral |
| Moon | 12th | Neutral |
| Mercury | 2nd + 11th | Malefic |
| Venus | 3rd + 10th | Malefic |

On both luminary lagnas, Mars carries the yoga and Mercury and Venus come out malefic. Mars counts both the Sun and the Moon as natural friends, so the partnership is comfortable as well as functional.

Remember it

Venus lagnas: Saturn builds, Jupiter and the Moon strain. Luminary lagnas: Mars builds, Mercury and Venus strain.

The curious case of Capricorn and Aquarius

Capricorn lagna

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Venus | 5th + 10th | Yogakaraka, the most powerful benefic |
| Mercury | 6th + 9th | Benefic |
| Saturn | 1st + 2nd | Benefic |
| Sun | 8th | Neutral: the Sun escapes 8th-lord blame |
| Mars | 4th + 11th | Malefic, the worst |
| Jupiter | 3rd + 12th | Malefic |
| Moon | 7th | Malefic (benefic owning a kendra) |

Aquarius lagna

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Venus | 4th + 9th | Yogakaraka |
| Sun | 7th | Benefic (malefic owning a kendra) |
| Mars | 3rd + 10th | Benefic |
| Mercury | 5th + 8th | Neutral: trine lifts, 8th drags |
| Jupiter | 2nd + 11th | Malefic |
| Moon | 6th | Malefic |
| Saturn | 1st + 12th | Not named in Raman's list; by his first rule the lagna lord is a benefic |

The 10th is the strongest kendra lordship and the 3rd the mildest of the hard ones, which is how Mars comes out a benefic here.

Why these two confuse people

Put them side by side and follow the steps.

Step 1: the shared lagna lord. Saturn rules both ascendants. Anyone who learned "Saturn is bad" is already wrong twice: Saturn is the lagna lord of both.

Step 2: the shared yogakaraka. Venus rules the 5th and 10th for Capricorn and the 4th and 9th for Aquarius. Both are kendra-plus-trine.

Step 3: the shared strain. Jupiter (3+12 / 2+11) and the Moon (7 / 6) are malefic for both.

Step 4: the flip. Move the lagna one sign and Mars goes from Capricorn's worst malefic (4th + 11th) to Aquarius' benefic (3rd + 10th). The Sun goes from neutral 8th lord to benefic 7th lord.

The case isn't really about two ascendants. Neighbouring signs share a ruler and still get different lordships, and that alone reverses two planets.

What it means for a reading

In practice this changes three things for a Saturn-ruled lagna:

All three are tendencies to weigh, never forecasts.

Remember it

Saturn lagnas: Saturn is the self, Venus is the yoga, Jupiter and the Moon strain. Mars is Capricorn's worst but Aquarius' friend.
