The Yogas chapter taught Raja Yoga: a kendra lord and a trikona lord joined, so the power to act meets the fortune to succeed.

Now imagine one graha ruling both. It doesn't need to meet anyone. It is the combination. That graha is the yogakaraka (the one who makes yoga).

The engine's rule, and the classical one: a graha that rules a kendra other than the 1st and a trikona other than the 1st. The lagna is excluded because it's both a kendra and a trikona by itself, so the lagna lord would qualify trivially.

The six yogakarakas

Run that rule over all twelve lagnas and exactly six yogakarakas appear:

Raman gives the same list, and notes it's possible only for Mars, Saturn and Venus. Notice the pairing: Venus-ruled lagnas get Saturn, Saturn-ruled lagnas get Venus (the two are natural friends), and the two luminary-ruled lagnas both get Mars.

Why only three grahas qualify

It's geometry, not favouritism.

The Sun and Moon own one sign each, so they can never rule two houses at all.

Mercury and Jupiter each own two signs a quarter-circle apart (Gemini and Virgo; Sagittarius and Pisces). Signs that far apart are always in kendra from each other: when one is a kendra from the lagna, so is the other. So Mercury and Jupiter rule either two kendras or no kendra, never a kendra plus a trine. That's also why they carry kendradhipati dosha so often.

Mars, Saturn and Venus own sign pairs spaced so that, for the right lagna, one lands in a kendra and the other in a trine.

A yogakaraka still needs strength

Being the yogakaraka is a promise of agenda, not a guarantee of delivery. Raman is explicit that how much yoga a yogakaraka actually produces depends on its strength, associations, aspects and placement.

So apply everything from Graha Strength. A yogakaraka Saturn exalted in a kendra is a loud, reliable ally. A yogakaraka Saturn debilitated and combust in the 12th still serves the 9th and 10th, but with little in its hands.

And Rahu and Ketu: they own no sign in this app, so they have no lordship and can't be yogakarakas by ownership. Classical notes say they act for the lords whose signs they occupy and the grahas they join.

What the app computes

The engine behind this app derives three lists from any chart's lagna:

Yogakarakas: a kendra other than the 1st plus a trikona other than the 1st. Exactly the six above.
Functional benefics: any lord of the 1st, 5th or 9th.
Functional malefics: any lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th.

Those last two are a deliberately blunt first sort. They don't apply kendradhipati dosha, don't include the 3rd and 11th lords, and don't exempt the Sun and Moon from 8th lordship. A graha can even land on both lists: Mars for Aries rules the 1st and the 8th. The engine also tags a separate temporal nature: benefic for a 5th/9th lord, malefic for a 3rd/6th/11th lord, mixed if both.

When the app's flags and this chapter's full rules disagree, the chapter is the finer instrument.

Remember it

Venus lagnas get Saturn, Saturn lagnas get Venus, the Sun and Moon lagnas get Mars. Six lagnas, three grahas, and a yogakaraka is only as good as its strength.
