The Twelve Lagnas

Six Lagnas Without One

The Mars, Mercury and Jupiter lagnas, and Jupiter and Saturn across all twelve.

The Mars and Mercury lagnas

No yogakaraka is not a weaker chart

Half the lagnas have no yogakaraka. That's geometry, not a handicap. These charts still have trikona lords, still form Raja Yogas when a kendra lord and a trikona lord join (the Yogas chapter), and still run on dignity and dasha like any other chart.

What changes is that the good agenda is split across two grahas instead of concentrated in one.

Aries lagna

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | 9th + 12th | The best benefic |
| Mars | 1st + 8th | Benefic, the next best |
| Sun | 5th | Benefic |
| Mercury | 3rd + 6th | Malefic, the greatest |
| Saturn | 10th + 11th | Malefic |
| Venus | 2nd + 7th | Malefic |
| Moon | 4th | Not named in Raman's list; his rules make it a mildly blemished kendra lord |

Scorpio lagna

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Moon | 9th | The best benefic |
| Jupiter | 2nd + 5th | Benefic |
| Sun | 10th | Benefic (malefic owning a kendra) |
| Mars | 1st + 6th | Neutral |
| Saturn | 3rd + 4th | Neutral |
| Mercury | 8th + 11th | Malefic |
| Venus | 7th + 12th | Malefic |

Both Mars lagnas share a pattern: the Sun is a benefic, Mercury and Venus are malefics. For Scorpio the 10th lord (Sun) and 9th lord (Moon) are different grahas, which is why a Sun-Moon link matters so much in a Scorpio chart.

Gemini and Virgo lagnas

Gemini

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Venus | 5th + 12th | The one real benefic |
| Moon | 2nd | Neutral |
| Mercury | 1st + 4th | Neutral |
| Jupiter | 7th + 10th | Malefic (two kendras) |
| Sun | 3rd | Malefic |
| Mars | 6th + 11th | Malefic, the most |
| Saturn | 8th + 9th | Not classified by Raman; genuinely mixed |

Virgo

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Venus | 2nd + 9th | The best benefic |
| Mercury | 1st + 10th | Neutral |
| Saturn | 5th + 6th | Neutral |
| Sun | 12th | Neutral |
| Jupiter | 4th + 7th | Malefic (two kendras) |
| Mars | 3rd + 8th | Malefic |
| Moon | 11th | Malefic |

Remember it

Mars lagnas: the Sun helps, Mercury and Venus strain. Mercury lagnas: Venus is the friend, Jupiter carries the kendra blemish.

The Jupiter lagnas, and the big two across all twelve

Sagittarius and Pisces lagnas

Sagittarius

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | 9th | Benefic |
| Mars | 5th + 12th | Benefic |
| Jupiter | 1st + 4th | Neutral |
| Moon | 8th | Neutral: the Moon escapes 8th-lord blame |
| Mercury | 7th + 10th | Malefic (two kendras) |
| Saturn | 2nd + 3rd | Malefic |
| Venus | 6th + 11th | Malefic |

Pisces

| Graha | Rules | Class |
|---|---|---|
| Moon | 5th | Benefic |
| Mars | 2nd + 9th | Benefic |
| Jupiter | 1st + 10th | Neutral |
| Mercury | 4th + 7th | Malefic (two kendras) |
| Sun | 6th | Malefic |
| Venus | 3rd + 8th | Malefic |
| Saturn | 11th + 12th | Malefic |

The dual-lagna pattern

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are the dual signs, and their kendras are the dual signs too, all four owned by Mercury and Jupiter.

So on every dual lagna, the two grahas that own the kendras are both natural benefics carrying the kendra blemish. Raman's pattern follows exactly: whichever is the lagna lord comes out neutral, and the other comes out malefic. Mercury is neutral for Gemini and Virgo; Jupiter is neutral for Sagittarius and Pisces.

And the helper each pair leans on is a graha from outside the kendras: Venus for the Mercury lagnas, Mars for the Jupiter lagnas.

Jupiter and Saturn across all twelve

The two planets the forums argue about, in Raman's classification:

| | Benefic (or yogakaraka) | Neutral | Malefic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | Aries, Cancer, Scorpio | Leo, Sagittarius, Pisces | Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius |
| Saturn | Taurus, Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius | Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Scorpio | Aries, Sagittarius, Pisces |

(Aquarius' Saturn and Gemini's Saturn aren't named in Raman's list. Aquarius counts by his lagna-lord rule; Gemini's 8th + 9th Saturn stays mixed and is left out.)

The great benefic is a functional malefic for half the zodiac's lagnas. The great malefic is a benefic or yogakaraka for a third of them.

"Which lagna won't get a good Jupiter transit?"

That question mixes two different tools.

Transit favourability (the Gochara chapter) is counted from the natal Moon, and it's the same table for everyone.

Functional nature is counted from the lagna, and it decides what Jupiter brings when it's activated. For a Libra lagna, a well-placed Jupiter transit still tends to carry 3rd- and 6th-house business: effort, competition, service. For an Aries lagna it tends to carry 9th-house fortune.

So the honest answer is that no lagna is locked out of a good Jupiter transit. The lagna changes what Jupiter's help looks like, not whether it can help.

Remember it

Dual lagnas: Mercury and Jupiter own every kendra; the lagna lord goes neutral, the other goes malefic. Jupiter lagnas lean on Mars; Mercury lagnas lean on Venus.

Terms introduced here

The six lagnas without one
Aries, Scorpio, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. On the dual lagnas, Mercury and Jupiter own all four kendras.
Lordship outweighs nature
A graha's natural temperament is fixed, but its functional nature (whose agenda it serves) comes from the houses it rules from the lagna.
