The Twelve Lagnas

Kendra Lords & the Hard Lords

The kendradhipati blemish, the 3-6-11 lords, and who escapes blame for the 8th.

The kendra blemish

Kendras flip the script

Kendra lords (4th, 7th, 10th) are neutral-ish. Which way they lean depends on the graha's natural temperament, and it runs backwards:

That second case has a name: kendradhipati dosha, the kendra-lord blemish.

One way to hold it: a kendra is a pillar, and a pillar doesn't care how pleasant it is. Ownership of one pulls a graha toward neutral from whichever side it started.

Who it hits hardest

The blemish isn't uniform. As commonly taught in the Parashari tradition, it bites hardest on Jupiter and Venus, less on Mercury, and least on the Moon.

Raman also ranks the kendra lords for the malefics who benefit: the 10th lord is more benefic than the 7th, and the 4th lord least.

And he adds one refinement worth knowing: a natural benefic that owns a kendra and sits in that same kendra (its own sign) stops acting as a malefic. His example is Venus in Libra for a Cancer lagna. The reverse holds too: a natural malefic sitting in its own kendra stops acting as a benefic.

Worked example: Jupiter owns two kendras

Gemini lagna. Count to the kendras: Virgo (4th), Sagittarius (7th), Pisces (10th).

Sagittarius and Pisces are both Jupiter's signs, so Jupiter rules the 7th and the 10th. Two kendras, zero trikonas, and Jupiter is the natural benefic the blemish hits hardest.

Raman's verdict for Gemini: Jupiter is evil (his word) for this lagna.

Now compare Aries lagna, where Saturn rules the 10th. Saturn is a natural malefic, so the 10th lordship pulls it toward benefic. (Aries still lists Saturn as a malefic, because Saturn also rules the 11th. You'll add lordships together in the next lesson.)

Remember it

Kendras pull toward neutral. A benefic loses its shine, a malefic loses its sting. Jupiter and Venus lose the most shine.

The 3-6-11 lords, the 8th, and the neutrals

Lords of 3, 6 and 11

The lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th lean functional malefic, whatever their natural temperament.

Raman ranks them: the 11th lord is the worst, the 6th lord less, the 3rd lord least.

That can surprise you, because the 11th is the house of gains. But the lord of the 11th serves desire and acquisition, and the tradition treats that agenda as a restless one. Note the difference from the Bhavas chapter's upachaya idea: a malefic sitting in the 3rd, 6th or 11th tends to do well, but ruling them is a different matter.

The 8th lord, and who escapes the blame

8th lordship is a blemish. The usual explanation is that the 8th is the 12th from the 9th, so it counts as a loss to fortune.

Two exceptions matter in practice:

A planet that rules the 8th alongside the 3rd or 11th gets no such relief. Mercury for Scorpio (8 and 11) and Venus for Pisces (3 and 8) are both on Raman's malefic lists.

The neutral lords: 2nd and 12th

Lords of the 2nd and 12th are treated as neutral: they tend to act according to their other sign and their company.

Raman's table bears this out. Jupiter rules the 9th and 12th for Aries and is the best benefic. Venus rules the 5th and 12th for Gemini and is its one real benefic. But Mercury rules the 2nd and 11th for Leo and is a malefic, because the 11th decides.

The luminaries rule only one sign each, so they have no other sign to lean on: Raman classes the Sun or Moon as 2nd or 12th lord as neutral. And he classes the Moon as lagna lord (Cancer) as neutral too, the single exception to "the lagna lord is a benefic".

Two signs, two jobs

Five of the seven sign-ruling grahas own two signs, so most carry two agendas at once. You judge them by adding the two:

| Lagna | Graha | Rules | Raman's class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancer | Jupiter | 9th + 6th | Benefic: the 9th outweighs the 6th |
| Leo | Jupiter | 5th + 8th | Neutral: trine lifts, 8th drags |
| Leo | Saturn | 6th + 7th | Neutral: kendra lifts a malefic, 6th drags |
| Aries | Saturn | 10th + 11th | Malefic: the 11th, worst of the hard lords, wins |
| Capricorn | Mars | 4th + 11th | Malefic, the worst for that lagna |

There's no formula that settles every case. Raman's lists leave three grahas unnamed (the Moon for Aries, Saturn for Aquarius and Saturn for Gemini). His own rules settle the first two; only Gemini's Saturn, ruling the 8th and 9th, stays genuinely mixed.

Remember it

Trines help, 3-6-11 hinder (11 worst), kendras pull to neutral, 2 and 12 borrow from their other sign. The 8th is a blemish, except for the lagna lord and the two lights.

Terms introduced here

Kendradhipati dosha
A natural benefic that rules a kendra loses its beneficence; a natural malefic that rules a kendra loses its sting.
Lords of 3, 6 and 11
These lords lean functional malefic. Raman ranks the 11th lord worst, then the 6th, then the 3rd.
The 8th lord and the neutral lords
8th lordship is a blemish, but not for the lagna lord or for the Sun and Moon. Lords of the 2nd and 12th take their colour from their other sign.
Two signs, two jobs
A graha ruling two houses carries both agendas. Weigh them together, e.g. Jupiter for Leo rules the 5th and 8th and comes out neutral.
