Why 'Jupiter good, Saturn bad' fails the moment you ask 'for which lagna?'

The question everyone skips

The Grahas chapter taught you that Jupiter and Venus are natural benefics and Saturn and Mars are natural malefics. That's true, and it stays true.

But it answers the wrong question for most readings. A learner asks "is Jupiter good in my chart?" and the honest reply starts with another question: which lagna?

The forums are full of people surprised that Jupiter disappoints a Libra ascendant or that Saturn quietly builds a Taurus ascendant's career. Neither is a paradox. It's this chapter.

Two natures, two questions

Every graha carries two different natures:

From the Bhavas chapter: a graha carries the matters of the houses it rules wherever it goes. Functional nature just takes that seriously. A graha ruling your 9th serves your fortune. The same graha ruling someone else's 6th serves their disputes and debts.

In the Parashari tradition, lordship outweighs natural nature when you judge what a graha tends to deliver.

Trikona lords are the good lords

Start with the one rule that never changes: the lords of the trikonas (1st, 5th, 9th) are functional benefics for every lagna, whatever their natural temperament.

B. V. Raman (How to Judge a Horoscope, Vol. I, ch. 2) ranks them too: the 9th lord is decidedly more benefic than the 5th lord. The lagna lord counts as a benefic as well, with one exception you'll meet later (the Moon, for Cancer).

So if Saturn rules your 9th, Saturn is on your side. If Mars rules your 5th, Mars is on your side. Their natural harshness shapes how they help, not whether.

Worked example: one Jupiter, two charts

Take the same Jupiter and change only the lagna.

Aries lagna. Count the signs: Sagittarius is the 9th, Pisces the 12th. Jupiter rules 9 and 12. The 9th is the best trikona, and a 12th lordship alone doesn't spoil a planet. Raman calls Jupiter the best benefic for Aries.

Libra lagna. Now Sagittarius is the 3rd and Pisces the 6th. Jupiter rules 3 and 6: both on the malefic list, no trikona in sight. Raman lists Jupiter as a malefic for Libra.

Same planet, same wisdom and expansiveness. For Aries it expands fortune; for Libra it tends to expand effort, competition and obligations. Nothing about Jupiter changed. Its job did.

What functional nature does not do

Two guardrails before going further.

It doesn't erase significations. Jupiter as a functional malefic is still the karaka of wisdom, teachers and children. Functional nature changes which houses' business it brings forward, not what Jupiter is.

It isn't a moral grade. A functional malefic isn't "against you". It carries the agenda of the harder houses (effort, disputes, loss, upheaval), and those houses are also where people build skill, win fights and let go of what they've outgrown. Tendencies, never verdicts.

Remember it

Nature says what a graha is; lordship says whose side it's on. Trikona lords (1, 5, 9) are always on yours, and the 9th lord most of all.
