Only three grahas get extra aspects

The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Rahu and Ketu aspect the 7th only.

Notice the 7th is in every row — the universal aspect never goes away. The special aspects are added to it.

Why these three, and why those houses

The classical picture fits each graha's nature.

Mars (4th and 8th) strikes at what is held — home and security (4th), and crisis and hidden things (8th). Its extra reach is sharp and disruptive.

Jupiter (5th and 9th) sees the two trikonas — creativity/children (5th) and fortune/dharma (9th). The great benefic's extra reach lands precisely on the houses of grace.

Saturn (3rd and 10th) sees the houses of effort and work — initiative (3rd) and career/duty (10th). The taskmaster's reach falls on labour.

Worked example

Saturn in the 1st house. Count inclusively from the 1st:

• 3rd aspect → 1, 2, 3 → the 3rd house
• 7th aspect → 1…7 → the 7th house
• 10th aspect → 1…10 → the 10th house

So Saturn in the lagna presses on initiative (3rd), partnership (7th) and career (10th) — as well as sitting on the self (1st). One placement, four houses touched.

Special aspects are one-way

This trips people up. The 7th aspect is mutual — if A aspects B by the 7th, B is 7 houses from A too, so B aspects A back.

The special aspects are not. Saturn in the 1st aspects the 3rd; a graha in the 3rd aspects the 9th, not the 1st. The gaze goes one way only.

Two grahas do aspect each other mutually if they happen to be, say, Mars and Jupiter at the right distance — but never assume it. Count both directions separately.

The nodes

Rahu and Ketu are treated here as casting the 7th aspect only, which is what this app computes.

Be aware that traditions genuinely differ — several schools give the nodes 5th and 9th aspects like Jupiter. This isn't a settled point, and you'll meet both. What matters for now is knowing which convention you're reading under: ours is the 7th.

Remember it

Mars is 4-7-8, Jupiter is 5-7-9, Saturn is 3-7-10. Read each row outward from 7 and the pattern is symmetric-ish: Mars leans back 3 and forward 1, Jupiter is even at 2 either side, Saturn leans back 4 and forward 3.

Aspects can be one-way

Except for the mutual 7th, a special aspect is not returned — Saturn seeing the 3rd does not mean the 3rd sees Saturn.
