Drishti & Yuti — How Grahas Reach Each Other

What a Drishti Is

A graha acts on the house it looks at, not only the one it sits in.

The gaze

A planet reaches further than its own house

Everything so far has read a graha where it sits: Saturn in the 7th affects partnership because it is in the 7th.

But a graha also looks at other houses, and what it looks at, it affects. That gaze is called drishti — literally sight. A house can be under a planet's influence without that planet being anywhere near it.

This is why two charts with identical house-placements can still read differently: the aspect web is different.

Every graha aspects the 7th from itself

The base rule is the same for all nine grahas: a graha aspects the 7th house from wherever it sits.

A graha in the 1st aspects the 7th. One in the 3rd aspects the 9th. One in the 10th aspects the 4th.

It is the opposite house — directly across the chart. Think of two people standing at either end of a room, looking straight at each other.

How to count it

Count inclusively, exactly the way you already count houses from the lagna: the graha's own house is 1.

So from the 4th house, count 4 (=1), 5 (=2), 6 (=3), 7 (=4), 8 (=5), 9 (=6), 10 (=7). A graha in the 4th aspects the 10th.

Shortcut for the 7th specifically: add 6, and wrap round 12 if you overshoot. 4 + 6 = 10. 9 + 6 = 15 → 15 − 12 = 3.

The gaze lands on a whole sign

An aspect falls on the whole house/sign, and therefore on everything in it — any graha sitting there, and the affairs of that house.

So when Jupiter aspects the 5th, it supports the 5th house's matters and aspects any planet standing in the 5th. One gaze, both effects.

Remember it

Everyone looks across the room. All nine grahas aspect the 7th from themselves — no exceptions. Some grahas look at more than that, which is the next level.

Terms introduced here

Drishti — the gaze
A graha influences the house it looks at, not only the house it sits in. Aspects are counted whole-sign from the occupied house.
The universal 7th aspect
Every graha aspects the 7th house from itself — the one aspect that is always mutual.
Counting an aspect
Count inclusively from the graha's own house as 1, exactly as houses are counted from the lagna.
