The Order of Operations

Structure first, detail last — the sequence that keeps a reading honest.

Why order matters

A beginner opens a chart, spots something striking — an exalted graha, a debilitated one, a yoga they just learned — and builds the whole reading around it.

That is the single most common way to read a chart badly. A striking detail found first becomes the frame everything else is fitted into.

The fix is mechanical: always work in the same order, from structure down to detail. By the time you reach the striking thing, you already know how much room it has.

The six passes

1. Lagna — which sign rises, and therefore which sign sits in every house. This fixes the whole frame.
2. Lagna lord — where it sits, its dignity, its condition. This is the person's overall footing.
3. Houses and their lords — for whatever question is being asked, find the relevant house, its occupants, and where its lord went.
4. Contacts — aspects, conjunctions, exchange onto those houses and lords.
5. Timing — which dasha is running, and which is next.
6. Patterns — yogas, last, as modifiers on what you already found.

Yogas come last deliberately. They are the most quotable and the least load-bearing.

Answer the question that was asked

Step 3 says for whatever question is being asked. That matters.

A chart is not read all at once. Someone asking about career gets the 10th house, its lord, the 6th and 11th, and the relevant dashas — not a tour of all twelve houses. A general reading without a question tends to produce a list of adjectives.

A question narrows the chart to the parts that can actually answer it. Ask for one.

Remember it

Lagna, lagna lord, the house in question, who touches it, when it runs, and only then what it's called. Structure, footing, subject, contact, timing, pattern.
