Remedies & Red Flags
Strengthen or Pacify
What a graha rules decides which direction helps, and why a gem for the wrong planet is the classic mistake.
Ask what it rules first
Two opposite directions
Remedies point in one of two directions. Some aim to strengthen a graha, giving it more capacity to deliver what it signifies. Others aim to pacify it, soothing the way it expresses itself.
Those are opposites, so choosing one is the first decision, not a detail. PVR's class notes make the point before any gemstone discussion: first decide whether the planet should be strengthened or weakened, which depends on whether it acts as a benefic or a malefic for this chart.
Back to the Lagnas chapter
The Lagnas chapter taught that a graha's role depends on which houses it rules for this lagna, not just its natural temperament.
In this app's engine, the lords of the trikonas (1, 5, 9) are functional benefics and the lords of the dusthanas (6, 8, 12) are functional malefics. A graha that owns one of each appears in both lists. As the Lagnas chapter showed, that is a blunt first sort, and the full rules (the 3rd and 11th lords, kendradhipati dosha) refine it.
The consequence for remedies: "Jupiter is a benefic, so strengthening it is always safe" skips the only question that matters. What does Jupiter rule here? For a Libra lagna, for instance, it rules the 3rd and the 6th.
The gemstone mistake
A gemstone is traditionally worn to strengthen its graha. Think of it as a volume knob, not a filter. It turns up the graha, and with it every house that graha rules, the difficult ones included.
So the classic mistake runs: "Your Mercury is weak, wear its stone", with no check of what Mercury rules. If Mercury rules a dusthana, strengthening it strengthens that house's matters too.
PVR's class notes are direct about it. They call gems a rajasic approach where a mistake does real harm, and advise against wearing the gems of dusthana lords. That's also why the reading app flags every gem suggestion for chart-specific review.
A weak Mercury for an Aries lagna
Aries lagna. Mercury sits in Pisces, the 12th house. Someone recommends its gemstone "because Mercury is weak".
Step 1: is Mercury weak? Pisces is Mercury's debilitation sign, so yes, on the face of it. (Check for neecha bhanga before leaning on that.)
Step 2: what does Mercury rule? Counting from Aries, Gemini is the 3rd and Virgo is the 6th. Mercury is the 6th lord, a dusthana lord, and so a functional malefic in the engine's terms.
Step 3: which direction? Strengthening a 6th lord is exactly the case PVR's notes caution against. A gem would turn up Mercury's 6th-house business along with everything else.
Conclusion: "weak, so strengthen" was a reflex, not a reading. A strengthening gem is the wrong tool here. If anything is done about Mercury's themes, the lower-risk kinds of response in the next level are where to look.
Weak isn't always bad
The Yogas chapter already showed the twist: in Vipareeta yoga, a 6th, 8th or 12th lord sitting in a dusthana can work in the person's favour. The lord of difficulty is itself hemmed in.
So a weak dusthana lord isn't automatically a problem to fix, and a strong one isn't automatically good news. "Weak planet → strengthen it" is a reflex, not a rule. The rule is lordship first, then direction, then any remedy.
Remember it
Ask what it rules before asking what it needs. A gem turns up the volume on every house the graha owns.
Terms introduced here
- Strengthen or pacify
- Before any remedy, decide whether a graha should be strengthened or soothed. That depends on what it rules for this lagna.
- The gemstone mistake
- A gem is worn to strengthen its graha, including every house that graha rules. Strengthening a dusthana lord is the classic error.
