Reading Your Chart
Your Ascendant
Your lagna — the sign that was rising at your birth, and the frame of your chart.
Your rising sign
The sign that was rising for you
Your Moon gives your janma rashi. The sign that was rising in the east at the moment you were born gives your lagna — your ascendant.
It becomes the 1st house of your chart, and the frame everything else is read against.
It needs your exact birth time
The lagna changes about every two hours, so your ascendant depends on an accurate birth time and place.
Two people born the same day, a few hours apart, can have completely different lagnas — and so completely different charts.
Your lagna sets your houses
Your lagna decides which sign becomes each bhava. With a Mesha lagna, Mesha is the 1st house, Vrishabha the 2nd, and so on around.
Change the lagna and the same planets light up different areas of life — this is why the ascendant is so personal.
Two seats: lagna and Chandra lagna
Jyotish often reads a chart twice — once from the lagna (the rising sign) and once from the Moon, treated as a second ascendant: the Chandra lagna.
Your rising sign and your Moon sign are two complementary vantage points on the same chart.
Body and mind
Your lagna is the body and the frame — what was rising as you took your first breath. Your Moon sign is the mind.
Together they anchor a reading to you.
