Seven owners, twelve signs

Only seven grahas own signs — Rahu and Ketu own none, because they aren't physical bodies with an orbit of their own.

The Sun and the Moon own one sign each (Leo and Cancer). The other five each own two. 1 + 1 + (5 × 2) = 12. Nothing left over.

The mirror around Cancer and Leo

The map isn't arbitrary — it's a mirror. Put Cancer (Moon) and Leo (Sun) side by side at the centre, then walk outward in both directions and the same lord appears on both sides, in the same order:

Why the lord matters so much

The sign lord is the link that makes a chart readable. It's how you get from a house to a planet: a house holds a sign, that sign has a lord, and where that lord sits tells you how the house is doing. Every later chapter — house lords, dignity, Raja Yoga, sign exchange — runs through this one table.

Remember it

Moon and Sun sit together in the middle; Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn step outward in step on both sides. Five planets, two directions, ten signs — plus the two the luminaries keep for themselves.
