The 12 Rashis

Elements & Modalities

Two overlapping grids that give all twelve signs their character.

Two grids on twelve signs

Four elements, repeating

Every rashi belongs to one of four elements (tattvas), and they repeat in a fixed order all the way round:

Fire (agni) → Earth (prithvi) → Air (vayu) → Water (jala)

Start at Aries and count: Aries fire, Taurus earth, Gemini air, Cancer water — then Leo fire again, and so on. Because 12 divides by 4, each element gets exactly three signs, and they always sit four signs apart (a trine).

What each element means

Fire — initiative, conviction, visibility. It starts things and wants to be seen.

Earth — substance, patience, results you can hold. It builds and keeps.

Air — exchange, comparison, abstraction. It connects and negotiates.

Water — feeling, memory, depth. It absorbs and dissolves boundaries.

Three modalities, repeating

The second grid asks how a sign operates:

Chara (movable/cardinal) — starts things. Restless, initiating, first to move.

Sthira (fixed) — holds things. Steady, resistant, sees it through.

Dvisvabhava (dual/mutable) — adapts. Flexible, two-natured, hands over.

This cycle repeats four times: Aries chara, Taurus sthira, Gemini dvisvabhava, Cancer chara again…

Every cell filled exactly once

Lay the two grids over each other and something tidy happens: 4 elements × 3 modalities = 12 — and each of the twelve cells is filled by exactly one sign.

So naming both facts pins a sign uniquely. "Movable fire" can only be Aries. "Fixed water" can only be Scorpio. Each element holds one starter, one holder, and one adapter:

| | Chara | Sthira | Dvisvabhava |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries | Leo | Sagittarius |
| Earth | Capricorn | Taurus | Virgo |
| Air | Libra | Aquarius | Gemini |
| Water | Cancer | Scorpio | Pisces |

Remember it

Elements go round in fours; modalities go round in threes. Element says what a sign is made of; modality says what it does with it. Give me both and I can name the sign.

Terms introduced here

The four elements (tattvas)
Every sign belongs to fire, earth, air, or water — repeating in that order around the zodiac.
The three modalities
Chara (movable), sthira (fixed), and dvisvabhava (dual) — how a sign starts, holds, or adapts. The cycle repeats four times.
Element × modality
Four elements × three modalities = 12 signs, each cell filled exactly once. Naming both pins a sign uniquely.
