The Six House Axes

Where Rahu wants more and Ketu needs less, across all six pairs of houses.

Six axes, not twelve placements

The nodes are always opposite, so they can only form six house pairs: 1/7, 2/8, 3/9, 4/10, 5/11 and 6/12. Each pair can run either way round, so there are twelve configurations.

Learn the six axes as six tensions between two areas of life. The Bhavas chapter already gave you what each house means, and this lesson just pairs them up.

Rahu's end and Ketu's end

The Grahas chapter put it simply: Rahu grabs, Ketu lets go. Across a house axis, that becomes:

• Rahu's house: where wanting concentrates. There is more attention and more appetite here, and often unfamiliar ground where the person has to learn as they go. It can overshoot.
• Ketu's house: where there is less need. The tradition calls Ketu the residue of the past, and practitioners often read its house as ability that doesn't ask for applause. From outside that can look like detachment. From inside it can feel like seeing through something.

Popular writing often recasts Ketu as "hidden truth" rather than detachment. That fits Ketu's picture of insight without display, but it is interpretation, not a separate rule.

Many modern practitioners read the axis as a see-saw: feed Rahu's end too hard and Ketu's end gets neglected. That is also a reading method, not something the engine computes.

1/7: self and partner

Rahu in the 1st, Ketu in the 7th. Self-definition is amplified: reinvention, wanting to be seen, building an identity. Partnership is where the person is less hungry. They may be easy-going or unusual in what they expect, or relate from a certain distance.

Rahu in the 7th, Ketu in the 1st. A strong pull toward other people and partnership, often toward partners from outside the expected background. Self-image is held lightly.

One discipline point. Ketu in the 7th does not decide whether or when someone partners. The 7th lord, Venus and the navamsa carry that question. Ketu colours how the person relates.

2/8 and 3/9

2/8: what's held and what's hidden.
- Rahu 2nd, Ketu 8th: an appetite for resources, family standing and voice, sometimes with unusual values or tastes. Ease with depth, research and upheaval.
- Rahu 8th, Ketu 2nd: fascination with what is hidden, research, sudden change and shared resources. Speech may be sparse or blunt, with little attachment to accumulating.

3/9: effort and belief.
- Rahu 3rd, Ketu 9th: bold effort, media and communication, risk-taking. Inherited doctrine gets questioned in favour of the person's own path.
- Rahu 9th, Ketu 3rd: hunger for philosophy, foreign teachers or unconventional beliefs. Effort without self-promotion.

Recall from Bhavas that the 3rd is an upachaya, a house that grows with effort. Upachayas handle a malefic's pressure well, which is why Rahu in the 3rd is often read as comfortable.

Reading one axis

Scorpio lagna. Rahu in Taurus (7th house), Ketu in Scorpio (1st house). Venus is in Pisces (5th house, exalted). Mars is in Leo (10th house).

1. Axis: 1/7, with Rahu at the partnership end. There is a strong pull toward other people, and self-image is held lightly.
2. Rahu's dispositor: Venus, exalted in the 5th. The pull toward partnership runs through romance, creativity and pleasure, and Venus is well able to deliver it.
3. Ketu's dispositor: Mars, the lagna lord, in the 10th. The person's own drive goes into work rather than into self-display.

Read: someone oriented toward relationships and creative connection, who defines themselves more by what they do than by how they come across. These are tendencies. The 7th lord (Venus again) and the navamsa would be the next checks for any partnership question.

4/10: roots and reach

Rahu in the 10th, Ketu in the 4th. Ambition, public visibility, often an unconventional or fast-changing career. The person is less rooted, may be restless at home, and is comfortable living away from where they started.

Rahu in the 4th, Ketu in the 10th. An appetite for home, property and security, sometimes a home far from the place of origin. Work gets done without much need for titles, and the career may change direction.

The 10th is an upachaya, so Rahu's pressure there often turns into drive.

5/11: creation and the crowd

Rahu in the 11th, Ketu in the 5th. Big goals, networks, gains, and a wide circle. The 11th is an upachaya, so this placement is widely read as a comfortable one for Rahu. Ketu in the 5th brings intuitive intelligence, deep or unusual study, and creativity that doesn't ask for an audience.

Rahu in the 5th, Ketu in the 11th. A strong hunger for creative expression, recognition and taking chances. Crowds matter less: fewer, chosen friendships and less interest in joining in for its own sake.

6/12: struggle and surrender

Rahu in the 6th, Ketu in the 12th. Competitive, good at handling conflict, drawn to service and problem-solving. The 6th is an upachaya, so this is another placement read as comfortable for Rahu. Ketu in the 12th brings ease with solitude, retreat and inner practice, and with foreign places without much longing for them.

Rahu in the 12th, Ketu in the 6th. A pull toward foreign lands, retreat and spending on experiences. Obstacles get cut through with little fuss.

So Rahu's four upachaya houses are the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th. Those are exactly the houses from the Moon where the classical gochara table rates a node's transit as favourable.

Why "high achievers have strong Rahu"

It is a popular observation, so test it.

Rahu is somewhere in every chart. Its four upachaya houses are a third of the wheel, so about one person in three has Rahu in a comfortable upachaya. Collect only famous charts and you'll find plenty of them. Collect the charts of people living quiet, ordinary lives and you'll find the same one-in-three share.

This is selection bias: you notice the cases that fit. The Synthesis chapter's rule applies. A theme needs several independent factors saying it, not one placement that a third of humanity shares.

Remember it

Rahu's house: more wanting. Ketu's house: less needing. Six axes, read from both ends. Then ask who each node works for, because the axis gives the topic and the employers set the tone.
