What Rahu and Ketu Mahadashas emphasise, where the fear comes from, and the nodal cycle as a window.

Eighteen years and seven

In the Vimshottari cycle (the Dashas chapter teaches the mechanics), Rahu's Mahadasha lasts 18 years and Ketu's lasts 7.

Each one opens with its own sub-period, then runs the fixed order:

• Rahu Mahadasha: Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars. The opening Rahu–Rahu sub-period is 18 × 18 ÷ 120 = 2.7 years, about 2 years 8 months.
• Ketu Mahadasha: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. The opening Ketu–Ketu sub-period is 7 × 7 ÷ 120, just under 5 months.

What a Rahu period tends to emphasise

The Dashas chapter judges a dasha lord by what it rules, where it sits, its condition and what touches it. A node rules nothing, so swap in its employers: dispositor, star lord, companions.

With that in place, Rahu periods tend to emphasise:

• The house at Rahu's end of the axis, turned up
• Unfamiliar territory: new fields, places, people, technologies, the foreign
• Appetite and pace: things can grow quickly, and the person may want more than they can digest

How well it goes depends on the employers. A Rahu period routed through a well-placed dispositor and star lord can be among the most expansive stretches of a life.

What a Ketu period tends to emphasise

Ketu periods tend to emphasise the other end of the see-saw:

• Simplifying: narrowing down to what matters
• Depth and precision: research, specialist skill, inner or spiritual interests
• Letting go of what has been outgrown, and less appetite for display

People often describe a Ketu period as a clearing out. As with Rahu, the employers decide the tone. Ketu working for a strong, well-placed lord gives focus. Ketu working for a struggling lord asks for more patience.

"Rahu Mahadasha takes everything"

You will read this online. Here is why it isn't a reading.

It skips the chart. The Dashas chapter's central rule is that a dasha activates what the chart promises. It doesn't invent losses or gains. A Rahu period can only deliver what its employers can deliver.

It is a selection. People rarely post "my Rahu period was fine". Eighteen years is a large slice of adult life, and almost any 18-year stretch contains highs and lows. Blaming all of it on Rahu is a story, not an analysis.

It can't be checked. A claim that holds whatever the chart says isn't really about the chart.

The honest question is always: what is Rahu working for in this chart?

Same 18 years, different employers

Chart A: Aries lagna. Rahu at 12° Aquarius (11th house), in Shatabhisha, its own star. Its dispositor Saturn rules the 10th and 11th and sits exalted in Libra in the 7th.
The Rahu period tends to amplify gains, networks and large goals, delivered through partnerships and dealings with the public. The main employer is comfortable doing that.

Chart B: Leo lagna. Rahu at 20° Pisces (8th house), in Revati, Mercury's star. Its dispositor Jupiter rules the 5th and 8th and sits debilitated in Capricorn in the 6th.
The Rahu period tends to intensify research, restructuring and shared resources. The main employer is working against the grain, so the period asks for more effort and delivers more slowly.

Both are 18-year Rahu periods, and they are very different experiences. Neither one is a sentence.

The nodes in transit

At about 18.6 months per sign, the transiting nodes are slow movers. Like Saturn and Jupiter, they set the backdrop of a period rather than the texture of a day.

Phaladeepika (ch. 26, as the engine cites it) gives Rahu and Ketu favourable transits in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the natal Moon, with no vedha pairs, so nothing obstructs them in that scheme. (The Gochara chapter covers the full table.)

Read a nodal transit as a window of emphasis on the two houses it crosses. It is not an event with a date attached.

The nodal return, and the half-return

About every 18.6 years the transiting nodes come back to their natal positions: around ages 18–19, 37, 56 and 74.

Halfway through each lap, about 9.3 years in (around ages 9, 28, 46–47 and 65), the transiting nodes sit reversed: transit Rahu on natal Ketu, and transit Ketu on natal Rahu.

An honest label: the nodal return is not a row in the classical gochara table. It is cycle arithmetic that many modern practitioners watch, and the app doesn't compute a "nodal return". Treat it as a window when the natal axis's themes tend to come up for review, and never as a promised event.

Dating a nodal return

Born 15 March 2001. Natal Rahu is at about 19° Gemini, and Ketu at 19° Sagittarius.

Running the engine forward:

• First return: transit Rahu is back in Gemini from about March 2019 to October 2020, and passes the exact natal degree around October 2019, at age 18.6.
• Second return: Rahu is back in Gemini from about November 2037 to May 2039, and passes the exact degree around May 2038, at age 37.2.

Notice what you actually get: an 18-month window with a centre point. The window describes a season. It doesn't tell you when anything particular will happen.

Remember it

Rahu 18 years, Ketu 7. The node's period delivers what its employers can deliver. In transit: 18.6 months a sign, back home about every 18.6 years. Every one of these is a window, never a verdict.
