Rahu & Ketu: The Nodal Axis

The Rules That Bend for the Nodes

No signs, no dignity, one aspect, never combust, and where traditions disagree.

What the nodes don't get

No signs of their own

The Rashis chapter taught that seven grahas own the twelve signs and the nodes own none. That holds throughout this app's house lordship: Rahu and Ketu are never the lord of a house.

That creates a real problem. The first thing you ask about any graha is "what does it rule?", and for a node the answer is nothing. The next level shows how the tradition handles that.

You will also come across co-lordship: some Jaimini techniques treat Ketu as co-lord of Scorpio (with Mars) and Rahu as co-lord of Aquarius (with Saturn). The engine does this inside its Jaimini techniques, such as Narayana dasha, and nowhere else. Ordinary house lordship still gives Scorpio to Mars and Aquarius to Saturn.

Exaltation: traditions differ

Ask five books where Rahu is exalted and you may get more than one answer. Many sources give Rahu exalted in Taurus and Ketu in Scorpio. Others give Rahu in Gemini and Ketu in Sagittarius. Debilitation is taken as the opposite sign either way. This is a genuine disagreement.

What this app does:

So if someone says your Rahu is exalted, the honest reply is: "in which tradition?"

One aspect, and it lands on the other node

The Drishti chapter covers aspects in full. For the nodes, this app gives them the 7th aspect only.

Notice what follows. Count seven houses from Rahu and you land exactly where Ketu is. So under this convention a node's aspect reaches no house outside the axis. Rahu looks at Ketu's house, Ketu looks at Rahu's, and the axis just looks at itself.

Several schools also give the nodes 5th and 9th aspects, like Jupiter. Under that convention, Rahu in the 1st would also reach the 5th and 9th. Neither view is settled. Just know which one you are reading under.

Never combust, always retrograde

More conditions that don't apply in the usual way:

What the app shows for Rahu in Gemini

Aries lagna. Rahu at 15° Gemini (3rd house), Ketu at 15° Sagittarius (9th house). The Sun is at 12° Gemini.

Almost every standard strength check comes back empty or fixed. On its own, this placement tells you very little. You need to know who Rahu is working for, and that is the next level.

Remember it

No house, no dignity, no combustion, one aspect. The nodes skip most of the strength checklist, so you judge them by who they work for.

The rules that bend for the nodes
In this app the nodes own no signs, carry no dignity, cast only the 7th aspect and are never combust. Traditions differ on several of these.
