Graha Strength & Dignity
Strength Capstone — Weigh a Real Placement
Run every strength check on one graha in your own chart.
Weighing a placement
The checklist
Given one graha in one chart, here's everything you now know to ask:
1. Dignity — exalted, moolatrikona, own, friend, neutral, enemy, or debilitated?
2. Combust? Within its orb of the Sun?
3. Retrograde? Strong, but turned inward.
4. Dig bala? Is it in its best angle — or the one opposite?
5. Who's touching it? (from the Drishti chapter) Aspects, conjunctions, exchange.
Five questions. Together they tell you how much weight to give that graha's placement.
A worked judgement
Jupiter in Capricorn in the 7th house, not combust, retrograde.
- Dignity: debilitated (Capricorn is Jupiter's neecha) — working against the grain.
- Combust: no.
- Retrograde: yes — strength, but internalised and revisited.
- Dig bala: the 7th is opposite Jupiter's best house (1st) — directionally weak.
- Aspects: Jupiter still casts 5/7/9 from the 7th → the 11th, 1st and 3rd.
Read: a strained but persistent Jupiter, whose wisdom is arrived at by rework rather than given, and which nonetheless reaches the lagna directly. Notice how little that resembles "bad Jupiter" — and how none of it is a prediction.
Now judge your own
Look at your chart below. Find your lagna lord — the graha that owns the sign in House 1 — then work out its dignity in whatever sign it's standing in.
What you still can't do (and that's fine)
Classical Jyotish has a full numerical strength system — Shadbala, six weighted components producing a score per graha. This chapter deliberately teaches the judgements rather than the arithmetic, because the arithmetic without the judgement teaches nothing.
What you can now do is real: pick up any graha in any chart and say, in a sentence, how strongly and how freely it is able to act. That is the input every later technique consumes.
Remember it
Dignity, combustion, retrogression, direction, contact. Five checks. They produce a weighting, never a verdict — Jyotish speaks in tendencies and windows, and a strong graha is a loud voice, not a certain outcome.
Terms introduced here
- Strength is weighed, never a verdict
- Dignity adjusts how much weight a placement carries. No single factor decides an outcome.
- The dignity ladder
- A graha's comfort in a sign runs exalted → moolatrikona → own → friend → neutral → enemy → debilitated.
