Dig Bala — Directional Strength

Each graha has one house where it works best, whatever sign it's in.

Strength from direction, not sign

Everything so far has judged a graha by its sign. Dig bala (directional strength) is different: it depends only on which house the graha occupies — specifically, which of the four angles (kendras) it sits in.

A graha with dig bala is effective: it gets things done in the world, whatever its dignity. A graha can be dignity-poor and still directionally strong, or exalted and directionally weak. These are separate axes.

The four positions

Each graha is weakest in the house opposite its dig bala house — Jupiter is directionally weak in the 7th, the Sun in the 4th, and so on.

Why those houses

The logic is pleasingly physical.

Sun and Mars — heat, visibility, action — are strongest at the 10th, the top of the chart, where the Sun is at noon.

Moon and Venus — comfort, feeling, the private — are strongest at the 4th, the bottom, the midnight point and the house of home.

Mercury and Jupiter — intellect and wisdom — are strongest at the 1st, the rising point, the house of the self and mind.

Saturn — endings, age, withdrawal — is strongest at the 7th, the setting point.

Remember it

Sun and Mars climb to the 10th; Moon and Venus rest in the 4th; Mercury and Jupiter rise in the 1st; Saturn sets in the 7th. Noon, midnight, dawn, dusk — the day's four corners.
