The exaltation table

Each of the seven sign-owning grahas has one exaltation sign:

Two pairs that swap

Two neat symmetries worth noticing, because they make four facts stick at once:

Mars and Jupiter swap: Mars is exalted in Capricorn where Jupiter is debilitated; Jupiter is exalted in Cancer where Mars is debilitated.

Mercury and Venus swap: Mercury is exalted in Virgo where Venus is debilitated; Venus is exalted in Pisces where Mercury is debilitated.

And the Sun and Saturn — natural enemies — are exalted in each other's debilitation sign too: Sun exalted in Aries where Saturn falls, Saturn exalted in Libra where the Sun falls.

Mercury's special case

Mercury is exalted in Virgo — a sign it also owns. It is the only graha whose exaltation sign is one of its own.

When both apply, this app ranks exaltation above own-sign, so Mercury in Virgo reads as exalted. That's a deliberate convention, applied identically in the reading app and here, so one chart never reads two ways.

Debilitation is a handicap, not a doom

A debilitated graha is working against the grain — its natural way of operating doesn't fit the sign it's standing in. It has to work harder for less immediate return.

It is not broken, absent, or cursed. Debilitation can even be cancelled under certain conditions — a pattern called Neecha Bhanga, which you'll meet in the Yogas chapter.

And as always: a handicap on one factor among many is not an outcome.

Remember it

Exaltation is one sign; debilitation is directly across the wheel. Mars↔Jupiter swap, Mercury↔Venus swap, Sun↔Saturn swap. That's six of the seven — only the Moon (Taurus up, Scorpio down) stands alone.

Count the table

A question that comes up constantly is why doesn't any planet exalt in Scorpio? Start by counting.

Seven grahas each have one exaltation sign, and no two share one: Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, Pisces. That uses seven of the twelve signs.

So five signs host no exaltation among the seven grahas: Gemini, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Aquarius. Scorpio isn't singled out. It is one of five, and it was always going to be that way, because the table gives each graha a sign rather than giving each sign a graha.

The mirror: signs with no debilitation

Debilitation always sits opposite exaltation. So a sign has no exaltation exactly when the sign opposite it has no debilitation.

Scorpio has no exaltation, so Taurus, opposite it, has no debilitation. But Scorpio does host a debilitation: the Moon's, opposite the Moon's exaltation in Taurus.

The five signs with no debilitation are Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius. Put the two lists together and Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius host neither. Scorpio is actually busier than those four.

What about Rahu and Ketu?

This chapter's table leaves the nodes out, and so does this app's dignity badge: Rahu and Ketu get no exaltation, no debilitation and no moolatrikona, and always read as neutral.

Other sources do assign them one, and they disagree. You'll see Ketu exalted in Scorpio (with Rahu in Taurus) in some, and Ketu exalted in Sagittarius (with Rahu in Gemini) in others. The engine uses the Gemini/Sagittarius version inside one Jaimini technique, Narayana dasha, and nowhere else.

So the honest answer to "does anything exalt in Scorpio?" is: among the seven grahas, no. For Ketu, it depends which tradition you ask.

And the "why"?

You'll find plenty of explanations online, for example that Scorpio is a sign of hidden depth where nothing can shine openly.

Treat those as later interpretation, not classical rule. This chapter teaches the exaltation table as it is used, and doesn't rely on a sign-by-sign reason for why it falls where it does. Explanations like that can be good memory hooks. Don't judge a chart by them.
