Sade Sati

The seven-and-a-half-year Saturn window — what it is, and what it isn't.

The definition

Sade Sati (Hindi sāḍhe sātī, "seven and a half") is a single, precise transit condition:

> Saturn transiting the 12th, the 1st, or the 2nd house from the natal Moon.

Saturn takes about 2½ years per sign, and three signs is about 7½ years — hence the name.

That is the whole definition. It has nothing to do with your lagna, your age, or any yoga. If you know your natal Moon's sign and where Saturn is today, you can determine it in ten seconds.

The three phases

The 7½ years divide into three distinct 2½-year phases:

Treating all 7½ years as one undifferentiated block is the most common error. The phases are genuinely different, and someone in the setting phase is in a different situation from someone entering the rising phase.

It comes round roughly every 30 years

Saturn's full circuit is about 29½ years, so Sade Sati recurs on roughly a 30-year cycle. Most people meet it two or three times in a life — commonly in their late twenties, late fifties, and late eighties.

That frequency is worth stating plainly, because it undercuts the doom framing by itself. Roughly a quarter of everyone alive is in Sade Sati at any moment. It is not a rare curse; it is a recurring season that a very large number of ordinary, thriving people are in right now.

What it actually describes

Saturn's nature is time, limit, structure, consequence and maturity. A long Saturn transit over the Moon describes a period of demand and consolidation:

• Effort returns less than usual at first, and rewards arrive late.
• Structures that were never solid tend to come under enough pressure to fail — jobs, relationships, arrangements one had outgrown.
• What survives it is generally more durable than what went in.
• Responsibility increases, and so does seriousness.

The classical reading is pruning, not destruction. Saturn removes what could not bear weight, and the periods people describe afterwards as having made them are very often this one.

What it is not

This is the most fear-mongered idea in the entire subject, so let's be exact.

It is not a disaster sentence. People are married, promoted, and successful during Sade Sati constantly.

It is not uniform. Its severity depends heavily on the rest of the chart — where Saturn sits natally, whether it is a functional benefic for that lagna, its dignity, and which dasha is running. For some lagnas Saturn is a yogakaraka, and its Sade Sati can be genuinely constructive.

It is not a reason to buy anything. The entire remedial-gemstone-and-puja industry runs on this transit. A period that a quarter of the population is in at any time does not require a purchase.

And it is not a prediction. It is a window with a character, in a life full of choices.
