The Gochara Table & Vedha

Where each transit is favourable — and the rule that cancels it.

The table

Phaladeepika (ch. 26, Gochara-phala) gives, for each graha, the houses from the natal Moon where its transit is favourable:

The pattern inside it

Don't memorise twelve rows — notice the shape.

3, 6 and 11 appear almost everywhere. Those are upachaya houses: houses of growth through effort, where struggle accumulates into gain. Even a malefic does well there, because the house rewards friction. Mars and Saturn — the two hardest malefics — are favourable in exactly 3, 6 and 11 and nowhere else.

Venus is favourable almost everywhere (nine houses), which fits the natural benefic of ease. Jupiter's list leans on 2, 5, 9, 11 — wealth, creativity, fortune, gains.

Learn 3-6-11 for the malefics and you have most of the table.

Vedha — the obstruction rule

Here is the part popular transit apps drop, and it changes half the answers.

A favourable transit can be blocked. Each favourable house is paired with a specific obstructing house — its vedha. If another graha is sitting in that obstructing house at the time, the favourable result does not come through.

Examples: the Sun is favourable in the 3rd, but a graha in the 9th obstructs it. Saturn is favourable in the 11th, but a graha in the 5th obstructs it. Jupiter is favourable in the 9th, obstructed from the 10th.

So the real question is never just "which house is Saturn in?" It is "…and is anything sitting in the house that blocks it?"

Two pairs that never obstruct each other

Two exceptions, both classical:

Saturn and the Sun do not cause vedha to each other. Mercury and the Moon do not cause vedha to each other.

(The traditional reasoning is relational — the Sun is Saturn's father, and Mercury is the Moon's son, so neither obstructs the other.)

Everything else obstructs normally. And the nodes are given favourable houses but no vedha pairs, so nothing blocks a Rahu or Ketu transit in this scheme.

Remember it

3, 6, 11 — good for nearly everyone, and the only good houses for Mars and Saturn. Then always ask the second question: is the blocking house occupied?
