SAV — The Whole-Chart Map

Sum the seven and the chart becomes a landscape.

Sarvashtakavarga

Add up all seven BAV scores for a given sign and you get its Sarvashtakavarga — SAV, the "total" ashtakavarga.

Since each of the seven can contribute up to 8, a sign's theoretical maximum is 56. In practice scores cluster in the twenties and thirties; a sign in the low teens or the forties is genuinely notable.

Twelve numbers, one per sign. That is the whole chart's strength landscape on a single line.

The total is always 337

A useful check: the twelve SAV values always sum to 337, in every chart ever cast.

That falls straight out of the tables — each subject graha's bindu rows contain a fixed number of entries, so the total number of bindus distributed is a constant. Only the distribution changes from chart to chart.

The practical consequences are worth sitting with. The average sign holds about 28 (337 ÷ 12 ≈ 28.1). And since the total is fixed, ashtakavarga is zero-sum: a chart with several very strong signs necessarily has weak ones elsewhere. Nobody gets a uniformly high chart.

Reading the map

Rules of thumb, held loosely:

Remember the SAV attaches to a sign, and a sign sits in a house. So a high SAV on the sign in the 10th says career matters have accumulated support; a low SAV there says they run on less.

The useful move is comparative, not absolute: which of this chart's houses are best and worst stocked? That reads far better than any threshold.

What SAV is actually measuring

Be precise about this, because the number invites over-reading.

SAV measures accumulated positional support — how many of the eight contributors happen to stand at favourable distances from that sign. That's it.

It does not measure outcome, and it does not know about dignity, dasha, aspects or yogas. A sign can score 34 and hold a debilitated, combust graha. A sign can score 22 and hold an exalted one.

SAV is a background field: the terrain a house's matters are played out on. The grahas are still the players.
