Capstone — What a Number Can't Settle

Where the arithmetic stops being an answer.

Why a number is dangerous here

Ashtakavarga is the most quantitative thing in the curriculum, and that makes it the easiest to over-trust. A number looks objective in a way a judgement doesn't, and readers reach for the objective-looking thing.

But the number is only as meaningful as what it measures — and what it measures is narrow: how many of eight contributors happen to stand at favourable distances from a sign.

That is a real, computable fact about a chart. It is not a measure of how a life goes.

What it does not know

A SAV or BAV score is blind to nearly everything you have learned:

• Dignity — a 34-SAV sign can hold a debilitated graha.
• Combustion and retrogression — invisible to the count.
• Aspects and conjunctions — the whole Drishti chapter is absent.
• House lordship — the count doesn't know a graha is the 10th lord.
• Dasha — it has no timing dimension at all.
• Yogas — no pattern is detected by bindus.

So a bindu count can never overrule any of them. It sits alongside them as one more witness.

The right use: another witness

The repetition rule from Synthesis applies exactly. A theme stated by three independent factors is signal.

Ashtakavarga gives you an independent, numerical witness — genuinely independent, because it is computed from positional distances rather than from dignity or lordship.

So when the 10th lord is strong, Saturn is dignified, the D10 holds up, and the 10th sign carries an above-average SAV, you have four witnesses from four different methods. That is a solid theme.

When ashtakavarga is the only thing supporting a claim, you don't have a theme. You have a number.

Not a score for a life

One last framing, in the same spirit as every other chapter here.

Because SAV totals are fixed at 337 for everyone, no chart is better or worse overall than any other by this measure. Every chart has exactly the same total, distributed differently. That is a rather good description of what the whole method claims: not that some lives are better, but that they have different shapes.

A bindu count tells you where a particular chart's support is concentrated. It never tells you what someone will make of it.

Remember it

Every chart totals 337 — the same points, arranged differently. Ashtakavarga is one independent witness among several. Alone, it is arithmetic, not a reading.
