The Nine Grahas

Drive & Intellect

Mangala and Budha — Mars and Mercury, action and thought.

Mangala: courage & drive

Mars is your energy

Mangala (Mars) signifies energy, courage, drive, siblings (especially brothers), land, and conflict. It is the commander — bold, direct, sometimes aggressive.

A natural malefic

Mangala is a natural malefic (krura graha) — not 'evil', but harsh and forceful. Its energy cuts; well-placed it gives discipline and protection, poorly placed it gives friction.

Where Mangala shines

Mangala rules Mesha (Aries) and Vrishchika (Scorpio). It is exalted in Makara (Capricorn) and debilitated in Karka (Cancer).

Budha: intellect & speech

Mercury is your intellect

Budha (Mercury) signifies intelligence, speech, communication, commerce, and analysis. It is the quick messenger — adaptable and clever.

The chameleon

Budha is mutable — it takes on the nature of whatever it sits with. Alone or with benefics it is benefic; joined to malefics it leans malefic.

Where Budha shines

Budha rules Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo). It is exalted in Kanya (Virgo) — rare, since it rules and is exalted in the same sign — and debilitated in Meena (Pisces).
