The houses of trips, journeys and residence abroad, read as a pull rather than a promise.

The question everyone asks

Will I settle abroad? It's one of the most-asked questions in Jyotish, and the tradition has a well-worn way to approach it.

First, a definition. Classically, 'foreign' means away from where you were born. In a world of small kingdoms that could be the next region over. Today it often means another country, but the chart knows nothing about passports.

Second, every indicator here is a tendency. A chart can show a pull toward living away. It can't issue a visa.

Travel versus settlement

As commonly taught in the Parashari tradition (B. V. Raman's approach is a well-known version), the houses split two ways.

Travel
- 3rd: short journeys and movement.
- 9th and its lord: long journeys, pilgrimage, other cultures.

Settlement
- 12th and its lord: foreign lands, residence away from the birthplace.
- 4th: home and roots. When the 4th is afflicted by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, the tradition reads a tendency to settle away from home.

Keep the two apart. Plenty of charts show a lot of travel and a firmly rooted home.

Links, Rahu and timing

Readers then look for links among the 4th, 9th and 12th, using tools you already have: a lord of one house sitting in another, or grahas sharing a sign.

Two more indicators:
- The lagna lord in the 9th or 12th: the self pulled toward distant places.
- Rahu, which the Grahas chapter called the planet of the foreign and unconventional. Rahu on the 4th, 9th or 12th adds a foreign element to that house.

For timing, the tradition looks at dasha periods of the 12th, 9th and 3rd lords, and of Rahu.

Worked example

Gemini lagna. Mercury sits in Taurus. Rahu sits in Virgo.

1. Find the houses. Counting from Gemini: the 3rd is Leo, the 4th Virgo, the 9th Aquarius, the 12th Taurus.

2. The lagna lord. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, and Mercury is in the 12th. One settlement indicator.

3. A second hat. Mercury also rules Virgo, so it is the 4th lord as well, and the home lord sits in the house of foreign lands. But it's the same graha, so count it as one witness with two meanings, not two witnesses.

4. Rahu on the 4th. A foreign element on home and roots. A second indicator. Rahu in Virgo works for Mercury, so it partly echoes step 2, but the 4th's affliction is still a separate classical factor.

The first read: two witnesses leaning toward living away from the birthplace, worth stating as a tendency. Timing goes to the dashas of Venus (12th lord), Saturn (9th lord) and Rahu. Whether it happens goes to work, money, visas, family and choice.

The guardrails

No countries. Nothing in a chart names a destination, however confident the reader sounds.

A pull, not a permit. The chart shows a propensity. Opportunity, money, visas, family and choice decide what happens.

Count witnesses. A theme that several independent factors state is worth saying. One Rahu placement on its own is not.

And remember that for many people moving abroad is a hope, not a fear. A 12th-house reading shouldn't be delivered as bad news.

3 takes trips, 9 takes journeys, 12 takes up residence, 4 is the home it leaves, and Rahu is the stranger in the story.
