Getting the Chart Right

Capstone: Getting the Chart Right

A setup checklist, confidence matched to the birth time, and forum confusion answered calmly.

Setup before meaning

The setup checklist

Before any interpretation:

1. Birth data. The date, the time and how it's known, the place and its coordinates, and the time zone that applied then. The suite records a birth time as exact, approximate or unknown. Say which it is.
2. Frame. Which ayanamsa is this chart cast on?
3. Houses. Whole-sign, chalit or Placidus?
4. Nodes. Mean or true?
5. Only now, meaning.

Steps 2–4 take ten seconds and prevent most "my two charts disagree" posts.

Match confidence to the time

| Birth time known to | Read with confidence | Treat with caution |
|---|---|---|
| The minute, or rectified | D1, D9, D10 | D60 and the other fine vargas |
| ±15 minutes | D1 and its houses (if the lagna isn't near a boundary) | D9 and D10 lagnas |
| A couple of hours | Grahas' signs and the Moon | Lagna, houses and dasha dates |
| Unknown | Slow grahas' signs, and the Moon if its sign is secure | Everything house-based |

This isn't timidity. It's the same rule as the rest of the curriculum: only say what the evidence supports.

A forum post, answered well

"One site says my Moon is in Hasta, another says Chitra. One puts Saturn in my 7th, the other in my 8th. Which is right?"

Step 1: Moon, Hasta or Chitra. Hasta ends at 23°20′ Virgo. A Moon within about a degree of that line changes nakshatra between ayanamsas. Likely cause: Lahiri on one site, Pushya-paksha on the other.

Step 2: Saturn, 7th or 8th. Signs don't change house on their own. Either one site draws a chalit, or the lagna is close enough to a boundary that the ayanamsa shift moved it. Check the house system, then the lagna's degree.

Step 3: the answer. "Probably neither site is broken. They're cast in different frames or house systems. Pick one frame and stay in it. If your lagna is near a boundary, your birth time matters more than the choice of website."

What not to say

Remember it

Data, frame, houses, nodes, then meaning. Match your confidence to your clock.
