The 10th House & Its Lord

The karma axis, which 10th to count, and where the 10th lord goes.

A narrower question than 'career'

The Bhavas chapter gave you the 10th house as career and standing — the highest, most visible point of the chart. That's the right house, and far too broad a question.

This chapter asks the one people actually bring: what kind of work does this chart describe? Not when a job comes (that's dashas), not whether a career succeeds (that's strength and yogas) — what line of work.

Three things on the chart answer it first: the sign in the 10th, the grahas in the 10th, and the 10th lord.

What the question really is

Classical texts don't name job titles. They name domains of activity — healing, land and building, metal and machines, words and records, law and teaching, image and beauty, authority and administration, labour and service.

A chart points at a domain. Which job inside it a person holds is decided by era, schooling, family and choice. The chart narrows the field; it doesn't assign the job.

And a practical truth from the reading app: most people who ask "what's my profession?" already have one. They're checking whether the chart can name it. So a good answer is an identification you can check, not advice about what to become.

Karmesha — the 10th lord

The 10th house is karma bhava, the house of action; its lord is the Karmesha.

You already know the rule from Bhavas: a house lord carries its house's matters wherever it goes. So the Karmesha's house tells you where the work is aimed, and its own nature tells you what the work is made of.

If you remember one thing from this level: read the 10th lord before anything else. It turns out to matter more than any other single factor — Level 3 shows why.

Which 10th do you count?

The tradition counts the 10th from the strongest of three points: the Lagna, the Moon and the Sun. Usually that's the Lagna. Sometimes the Moon or the Sun is clearly stronger, and the 10th from that point carries the career.

The Lagna isn't a graha, so its strength is represented by its lord. The reading app compares the Lagna lord, the Moon and the Sun on a divisional-strength score (Vimsopaka, out of 20) and counts from the winner.

You won't compute that by hand here. The habit worth building is simpler: check the 10th from the Moon as well as from the Lagna, and notice when they tell different stories.

The 10th lord through the houses

B. V. Raman (How to Judge a Horoscope, Vol. 2) gives an entry for the 10th lord in each house. As the reading app's rule set carries them:

Notice the 10th and 11th entries: they describe standing and earnings, not a trade. They tell you nothing about which work. (Raman's bare 8th entry, 'many breaks in career', is about a career's course; his variant with Jupiter's influence, 'a mystic or spiritual teacher', does name a field.)

Worked example

Cancer lagna. Mars in Libra.

1. Find the 10th. Count ten signs from Cancer: Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries.
2. Name its lord. Aries is ruled by Mars. Mars is the Karmesha.
3. Where is Mars? Libra is the 4th house from Cancer.
4. Read Raman's entry. 10th lord in the 4th: learned; agriculture or immovable property.

That's one lens, not a verdict — Mars has its own list still to come in Level 2. But it's already a checkable direction: land, building, property.

Remember it

Sign, sitters, lord — and the lord first. Count the 10th from the Lagna, glance at the 10th from the Moon, then follow the Karmesha to its house.
