Bhavas — The 12 Houses

Houses 1-3 — Self, Wealth, Courage

The first three bhavas: who you are, what you hold, and the drive to act.

1st house — the self (Tanu / Lagna)

The 1st house is you — the body, physical constitution, personality, vitality, and the overall direction of the life. It's the frame the whole chart is read against.

Everything starts here: the 1st house is the lagna, and every other house is counted from it.

2nd house — wealth & family (Dhana)

The 2nd house covers what you hold: accumulated wealth and savings, the immediate family, speech and voice, food, and your values — the resources gathered close around you.

3rd house — courage & effort (Sahaja)

The 3rd house is drive: courage, initiative, self-effort (parakrama), skills and hands, communication, short journeys, and younger siblings. Where the 1st is who you are, the 3rd is what you're willing to do.

Looks, in the chart

The 1st house is the body, so it's where the tradition looks when a question is about physique. What does my chart say about how I look? is one of the most-asked questions on Jyotish forums.

Classical texts do describe the body from the chart. What they describe is build (frame and stature), complexion-style descriptors of colouring, and bearing: how a person carries themselves.

Hold onto that list. The last card comes back to it.

Four things the tradition weighs

1. The lagna sign. The rising sign sets the basic frame, the way a sign colours anything placed in it.
2. The lagna lord, the ruler of that sign (Aries → Mars, Taurus → Venus, and so on). Its strength speaks to vitality and constitution. Following lords properly comes later in this chapter.
3. Grahas in the 1st, or aspecting it. A graha in the 1st lends its nature to the body, and so does one that aspects the 1st. Every graha aspects the house 7th from itself, so anything in the 7th looks straight at the 1st. The Drishti chapter covers aspects in full.
4. The Moon, secondarily. The Moon's sign is a second vantage point (the Chandra lagna), read alongside the lagna, not instead of it.

Why there's no lookup table here

The logic is one you already know: each factor lends its nature to what it touches, and here what it touches is the body. The Sun's significations include bones and eyes; Mars is energy and drive; by the same logic the lagna sign's character colours manner and bearing.

Classical texts go further and give each sign and graha a physical description. Those descriptions differ between texts and translations, so this course doesn't hand you a sign-to-looks table. When you meet one, treat it as that text's description, not a fact about a person.

Worked example

Cancer lagna. The Moon sits in Taurus. Mars sits in Capricorn, the 7th house.

1. The lagna sign. Cancer: water, movable. That's the frame the rest is read against.

2. The lagna lord. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and the Moon is exalted in Taurus. A strong lagna lord is read as well-supported vitality.

3. Aspects on the 1st. Mars in the 7th looks straight across at the 1st. Mars is energy and drive, and it's exalted in Capricorn, so it adds a vigorous note.

4. The Moon, secondarily. The Moon's sign is Taurus, a second vantage point to weigh alongside Cancer.

What came out: a description of constitution and bearing, good vitality with an energetic streak. Notice what didn't come out: any verdict on whether this person is good-looking.

What isn't in the chart

Worth saying plainly, because forums rarely do: cultural beauty standards are not in the chart.

What counts as attractive shifts between countries, decades and feeds. The texts that describe the body from a chart predate all of those standards, and no chart factor ranks anyone's looks. Genes, age, health and plain personal taste shape how people look and how they're seen.

The same limit holds when people ask what a partner will look like from the 7th house. A chart can offer build and bearing as tendencies. It can't tell you whether anyone will find them beautiful.

Remember it

Sign sets the frame, lord sets the vitality, visitors add colour, the Moon seconds it. Build, colouring and bearing are in the chart. Beauty standards aren't.
