Bhavas — The 12 Houses
House Families — Kendra, Trikona, Dusthana, Upachaya
The functional groupings that cut across the twelve — the vocabulary reading and yogas rely on.
The four families
Kendras — the pillars (1, 4, 7, 10)
The kendras (angles) are houses 1, 4, 7, 10 — the pillars of the chart. Planets here gain the power to act and shape the life visibly. Strong, stabilising houses.
Trikonas — fortune (1, 5, 9)
The trikonas (trines) are houses 1, 5, 9 — the trine of dharma and fortune. Classically the most auspicious houses: grace, wisdom, creativity, and luck. Note the 1st is both a kendra and a trikona — the single strongest house.
Dusthanas — challenge (6, 8, 12)
The dusthanas are houses 6, 8, 12 — the houses of difficulty: obstacles, upheaval, and loss. But read them as challenge and growth, never doom: the 6th overcomes, the 8th transforms, the 12th releases.
Upachayas — growth (3, 6, 10, 11)
The upachayas are houses 3, 6, 10, 11 — houses of increase. Their matters improve with time and effort, and even malefic planets tend to do well here, growing stronger as life goes on.
Why this matters
These families are the working vocabulary of reading. When the Yogas track says "a kendra lord joins a trikona lord" — that's a Raja Yoga, and now you know exactly which houses it means.
